The Ilkley Art Trail for 2015 will commence on October 7th and run for five days through to October 11th. The latest map on our site Art Trail 2015 Map shows the venues where local artists will display some of their works.

This interactive map is similar in style to the Food and Drink map and categorises the content of the map by the venues rather than the artists.

Users can either select venues via their number icons on the map or by selecting the image in the left-hand column. Either way the resultant pop-up will show details of both the venue and a brief synopsis for each artist displaying there. Note that some venues have multiple artists while others only have one.

Its been a while but there is a new map on the site which aims to map the Social Media usage in the Ilkley area.

Currently the map will display data from four social media sites, namely Twitter, Flickr, Panaramio and You Tube. Any of the aforementioned instances of posts that have had a geographic location assigned will be plotted on the new map.

Searches can be customised by filtering the data. For example it is possible to search on a specific keyword or even a specific time period. Clicking on an individual result point on the map will either display the Tweet the Photograph or the Video associated with that post. The results can also be plotted either as individual events, as clusters or as a density map.

If you would like to view your own Tweets you will need to make sure that the location information preference is activated on your phone or PC before tweeting.

There is a feature about the website in the November issue of Ilkley Matters. Check it out if you get the chance.

The latest map on our site Geology Map is one that I have been meaning to complete for some time.

The data content for this new map comes courtesy of the British Geological Survey (BGS). Solid Bedrock Geology, Surface or Superficial Geology and Borehole map data have been served up by the BGS and are consumed within my application. The two geology layers are served at two different scales. Namely, 1:50,000 and 1:625,000. The coarser scaled data becomes evident when zooming out from the map. It should be noted that the geology layers will disappear altogether if the map is zoomed in too far. This is a limitation of the underlying BGS data.

The Boreholes data on the third map will display at all scales. Perhaps the most intersting thing of note is the obvious planned route of the ill-fated Ilkley by-pass from the mid 90's.

Clicking any feature on the map (geological unit, geological structure, borehole etc.) will reveal a pop-up with information about that feature.

The layout of this application is different from the others on the site in that there is an 'accordian' type panel on the left of the frame which accesses any one of the three different datasets in the main map window.

The Ilkley Art Trail for 2013 will commence on October 9th and run for five days through to October 13th. The latest map on our site Art Trail 2013 Map shows the venues where local artists will display some of their works.

This interactive map is similar in style to the Food and Drink map and categorises the content of the map by the venues rather than the artists.

The latest map to be added to the site is an interactive distance and elevation profile calculator. The idea of this particular map is allow the user to check on both the distance, and the changes in elevation of a walking route.

The map can be used in a variety of ways. Firstly, some popular local walks from various websites have been added to the map and are shown as different coloured routes. Clicking on one of these routes will generate an elevation profile in the bottom window of the application. This window will show both the length of the walk and the elevation change along the walk. By hovering the cursor over the profile the user can see the location (red cross) on the map in the top window. Links to the original website showing walk details can be accessed in the pop-up windows.

Alternatively, the user can generate their own route on the map, perhaps when planning or returning from a walk, run or bike ride. There are three tools in the drop-down Measure menu that enable points, lines or polygons to be created on the map. When generating their own route/area the last point needs to be double-clicked, at which point the profile window wil be populated in the same manner as the pre-defined walking route option. To exit this mode the user should return to the Measure drop-down and de-select the relevant tool.

Food and Drink map updated to reflect the change in status of The Vintage Tea Rooms to Lounge10 Bar and Coffee Shop. Also the new Aagrar restaurant has been added to the site.

Another new map has been added to the site which compares three old Ordnance Survey maps from three different periods side by side. Historic OS Maps. The maps are at varying scales and from different time periods so allow the viewer to compare and contrast Ilkley over the years.

The application lets the user synchronise the maps by either location or scale or both. Alternatively the viewer can turn off all synchronisation and the maps can be panned and zoomed independently.

The maps are particularly large and so can take a while to load.

The latest map addition comes as a direct result of a suggestion from one of the visitors to the ilkleymaps web-site. Ancient Sites, Stone Circles and Rock Art around Ilkley. There are many such ancient sites all over Britain but the local Moors are particularly abundant in these historic locations. The sites on my map are taken largely from either the Megalithic Portal website or the Ancient Antiquarian website. Some of the locations might be up to 100m off from their correct location but I have moved the ones that I know of to the right place using satellite imagery. Undoubtedly some of the sites remain mis-located.

Please contact me if you have suggestions of any other suitable themes that would justify their own mapping application.

Need to post a letter? Well on the off-chance that you don't know where your nearest post box or post office is you might want to check out the latest map on the site Postal Facilities in Ilkley. The post code polygons have been calculated from point location values which is why they look slightly strangely shaped but they should be accurate in the vast majority of locations.

A new map showing the geo-tagged locations of Old Photographs in Ilkley has been added to the map gallery. The current set of photos are shown by kind permission of Francis Frith, Bradford Libraries and English Heritage.

The marker locations on the map are my own interpretation of where I think the photographer was located when the photo was taken. If you have any better information or idea of a more correct location then please contact me so that I can re-position the image.

More importantly, if you have, or know of any old images of Ilkley that you would be willing to have displayed on the map then please get in touch. I can offer a free digital scanning service if required. All photos would be correctly attributed and labelled with any copyright information as requested. Images can also be 'watermaked' if required.

Details for Kiplings Cafe Bar and Indian Restaurant have been updated on the Food And Drink Map page. Also, at the request of Martinez Wines, the tab previously labelled as Pubs has been changed to Bars. If you run any of the establishments featured on this map and want any information adding or ammending, please get in touch.

Similar to the Simple Swipe map which compares a satellite image with a road map, the new Historic Swipe Map compares an historical map from around 1900 with current day Ilkley. Swiping the central bar allows the user to see how Ilkley has changed over the last century. Due to inaccuracies in the original old map the maps aren't exactly aligned but are close enough to give meaningful results.

The Tour De France will be starting in Leeds in 2014 and the route on day one will be passing through Ilkley. Our latest map shows the routes for both days one an two when the cyclists will be passing through Addingham for the second time. The map also has a countdown script which should give you plenty of time to get a good place at the kerbside .... 531 days at the time of posting!

The Blue Plaques map has been updated by adding the latest blue plaque award. This was the Drill Hall just off the Leeds Road near to Booths supermarket.

A new map showing the civil parishes in the Ilkley area has been added to the map gallery. Undoubtedly not the most interesting map on the site but it does contain useful web links to the civil council web-sites

The Ilkley Maps website is a personal project which combines three of my strong interests, namely Cartography, Web-site design and the town of Ilkley. The idea behind the project is to create a single website which can be accessed either by visitors to Ilkley or by residents of the town and surrounding areas. The content is intended to be a series of maps that display information that might not normally be displayed in cartographic form but that readily lend themselves to this medium.

The web-site is a strictly not-for-profit enterprise and is solely designed for the use of the community. I would like to take the opportunity to ask only for help in keeping the site up to date. Some of the maps will not change a great deal over time whereas others will be constantly evolving. In particular I would seek help from the proprietors of any of the establishments that feature in the Food And Drink map to keep me informed of any changes that are relevant. I would also ask for submissions of descriptive text that would better describe their bar, cafe or restaurant. Current descriptions have either been taken from their own web-site or written by myself.

The initial release of the site has a limited number of active maps but there are already several other maps under development -- listed under the Coming Maps tab in the List of Maps menu. However I would also like to garner suggestions for other maps that you would like to see. Bear in mind that for a successful map we would require a good geographic spread of information in the case of point locations, for example the Blue Plaques map or pre-existing Map Services in the case of the Swipe Map. I would also like to restrict suggestions to the locale of Ilkley or its immediate surroundings (although I realise this was not the case with the Olympic Athletes map).
